KDF vs. Metals
KDF-55 media will remove up to 98% of the water soluble cations of lead, mercury, silver, nickel, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, and most other dissolved heavy metals upon direct contact. The removal mechanism is electrochemical and partially catalytic. Metallic contaminants are permanently bonded to the KDF media, until sent to a secondary copper smelter for recycle, recovery and reuse.
Copper and zinc ions initially released into the water have a tendency to redeposit themselves onto the KDF media. Under the worst conditions, the zinc and copper residual coming from the filter media is about 0.6mgl zinc and 0.2 mgl for copper, well within EPA and FDA standards for drinking water. The life of heavy metal removal is very long. In one independent test, all metals added to the influent water were many times over the allowable limits, in addition to H2S and CL2. The water was passed through a column containing 5 pounds of KDF-55 media, at a flow rate of just under 1 GPM. At 238,000 GALLONS, Chromium broke through. At that point, all metals were tested. After 238,000 gallons, the KDF was still removing 94.4% of the Lead, 16% of the Fluoride, 34.1% of the Nitrate (asN), 100% of the Barium, 99.7% of the Arsenic, 90% of the Cadmium, 65.8% of the Chromium VI, 60.1% of the Chromium III, 100% of the Selenium, and 100% of the Mercury.
